Work package 5: Production And Characterization Of
Natural Organic Pigments Based On Ancient Recipes

Start date or starting event 13 th month
Activity Type RDT/Innovation activities

. Experimental re-creation of organic natural pigments based on ancient recipes.
. Examination of the preparation and extraction methodology on the performance ( endurance, aesthetic appearance and quality) of the pigments.
. Examination of artificial ageing on the performance and composition of the pigments.
. Semantic issues relevant to the topic will be considered.
. Production of natural organic pigments based on ancient recipes.
. Evaluation of the dyestuff extraction conditions on the pigment performance.
. Evaluation of influencing parameters (e.g. type and concentration of the mordant metal) on the performance of the organic pigments.
. Evaluation of ageing on the pigment performance
. Comparison of the results with the analysis of artefacts (task 4.2 & 4.3).
. Consideration of semantic issues regarding the processes and the materials involved.
D5.1. Preparation procedures of natural organic pigments, typical for the Mediterranean area using ancient recipes.
D5.2. Effects of the preparation and extraction conditions of natural organic pigments on their performance.
D5.3. Ageing effects on natural organic pigment performance and on art objects typical for major Mediterranean civilizations.
. Evaluation of the role of the preparation and extraction conditions of natural organic pigments on their performance. Expected result: Mordant metal (type and concentration), dyestuff concentration, dyeing duration, dyeing temperature should be influencing parameters.
. Assessment of the major parameters affecting the performance of natural organic pigments. Expected resul: Mordant metal (type and concentration) should the major influencing factor.
. Assessment of ageing effects (UV radiation, temperature and humidity) on the performance and composition of the organic pigments. Expected resul: UV radiation is expected to be the most important factor, affecting the stability of the pigments. Alterations to pigment compositions, upon ageing, is a possible scenario.
. Assessment and evaluation of the ruinous effects of ageing on art objects. Expected resul: Deviations in dyestuff composition (from what should be expected according to the ancient recipes) might be observed because of ageing effects.

For STREPs/STIPs each WP must relate to one (and only one) of the following three possible Activity Types: RTD/Innovation activities, Demonstration activities, Management activities.
Milestones are points where major results have successfully been achieved as the basis for the next phase of work, or which serve as control points at which decisions are needed; for example concerning which of several technologies will be adopted as the basis for the next phase of the project.
