Work Packages
Work package 3: Chemical Synthesis Of Colouring
Components (Standards)

Start date or starting event 1 st month
Activity Type RDT/Innovation activities

. Creation of a library containing standards (=colouring ingredients of natural dyestuffs of interest) as stock materials to be used for accurate identification of the dyestuffs at a molecular level.
. Specification of the standards available in the market.
. Specification of safe synthetic routes and exploitation of them.
. Location of laboratories that might contribute either "partially" in particular synthetic steps or "fully" in the production of some standards.
The present work package will be a three step process, as follows:
Step 1: Standards available in the market.
. Description of the standards (regarding purity, production process, MSDS etc.), available in the market and/or supplied by partner 7.
Step 2: Synthesis of standards.
. Collection of literature associated with synthetic routes of standards.
. Evaluation of these routes with respect to the preparation via evaporation of an HPLC. The latter can result in a few milligrams.
. Exploitation of the published routes and preparation of standards (500mg from each standard). Characterization and evaluation of the products.
Step 3: Employment of a custom syntheses laboratory
. Employment of a custom syntheses laboratory for standards not available in the market (step 1) and/or cannot be produced by the consortium (step 2) because of technical difficulties.
. Employment of a custom syntheses laboratory to perform some steps of a synthetic process, which cannot be performed by the consortium.
D3.1. Commercial standards (colouring ingredients) selection and description - Materials Safety Data Sheets.
D3.2. Synthetic routes for standards: production of 500mg for each standard. Results, discussion and conclusions.
. Synthetic routes (for standards) assessment and evaluation. Expected result: Information available in the literature should provide safe synthetic routes.
. Evaluation of the produced standards (purity, yield, safety). Determination of the applicability of the final products and decision upon employment (or not) of a custom syntheses laboratory. Expected result : Satisfactory products are expected.
. Selection of a custom syntheses laboratory. Evaluation of several laboratories based on the offer (economical and deadline for submission) made to the PM of the project, quality of the laboratory, safety. Expected result: Production of standards that cannot be produced by the consortium (the latter, however, is considered as unlikely).

For STREPs/STIPs each WP must relate to one (and only one) of the following three possible Activity Types: RTD/Innovation activities, Demonstration activities, Management activities.
Milestones are points where major results have successfully been achieved as the basis for the next phase of work, or which serve as control points at which decisions are needed; for example concerning which of several technologies will be adopted as the basis for the next phase of the project.
