Work package 2: Collection of historical data, sources of
natural dyestuffs and art objects of the mediterranean area

Start date or starting event 1 st month
Activity Type RDT/Innovation activities

.Collection of materials, necessary for the implementation of the project and explanation of the outcomes (link to historical and artistic information). Specifically:
. Historical data collection: Natural organic pigments in Mediterranean area.
. Specification of the materials (sources, pigments, dyestuffs and standards) which will be studied during the project.
. Selection of dyestuffs, pigments and corresponding natural sources (plant, insect and molluscan origin).
. Selection of colouring components (i.e. active ingredients) of the selected dyestuffs to be used as standards in the analytical processes.
. Selection of art objects (icons and paintings, manuscripts, textiles) for analysis.
. Collection of information, found in historical sources, associated with natural organic pigments used in the major phases of Mediterranean civilizations. Information will include the origin and provenance of pigments and technical information associated with pigment preparation steps (ancient recipes) used in art objects, typical for the major civilizations which were developed in the Mediterranean area. Data for the latter will also be included.
. Specification and collection of the materials (sources, pigments, dyestuffs and standards) which will be studied during the project, according to the historical data. Materials list, however, will be updated upon artefacts analysis (task 4.2).
. Specification and collection of art objects, typical for the Mediterranean area and corresponding civilizations.
D2.1. History of natural organic pigments in the Mediterranean area.
D2.2. Natural organic pigments, dyestuffs, colouring components and corresponding sources collection and description
D2.3. Art objects of the Mediterranean area collection and description.
. Reference materials selection assessment: organic pigments/ dyestuffs, corresponding sources and corresponding colouring components (standards). Selection based on the historical data. Expected result: Reference materials collection. Some strong candidates are provided in the detailed WP description.
. Art objects selection assessment: textiles, manuscripts, icons and paintings will be selected according to historic (and technical) criteria assuring the representation of the main phases of Mediterranean civilizations. Expected result: Collection of objects typical for major Mediterranean civilizations (e.g. Byzantine, Ottoman, Arabic, Roman, Eastern ancient and Mediterranean ancient civilizations).

For STREPs/STIPs each WP must relate to one (and only one) of the following three possible Activity Types: RTD/Innovation activities, Demonstration activities, Management activities.
Milestones are points where major results have successfully been achieved as the basis for the next phase of work, or which serve as control points at which decisions are needed; for example concerning which of several technologies will be adopted as the basis for the next phase of the project.
