Based on the results of phase 1 a three-step development procedure will be deployed as follows: (i) The production of model organic pigments, based on ancient techniques, will be performed. The preparation and extraction processes will be evaluated, with respect to pigment performance, by analysis of the dyes produced . In addition, ageing effects will also be considered. Conclusions will be reached by considering the results of the analyses of the art objects leading to a more detailed explanation of the colouring technology developed in the Mediterranean area. (ii) The results will lead to the formulation of protocols for optimisation and standardization of the production process of natural organic pigments. (iii) These protocols will be finally used on an industrial (pilot) scale with an ultimate goal to commercialise organic pigments, prepared by ancient techniques, typical of the Mediterranean area. The newly synthesized materials, along with the conclusions obtained in this phase, are expected to have a broad impact to the conservation and restoration of the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean area.
