The investigation will start with (i) the collection of historical data about ancient recipes for natural dyestuff production, typically used for art objects and with (ii) the gathering of information regarding natural dyestuff sources such as plants, insects and molluscs all of which will be typical for Mediterranean civilizations. Then materials such as reference dyestuffs and corresponding standards, available in the marke t, will be purchased or provided by partner 7. Some of the standards that are not available will be synthesized within the framework of the project, creating thus a powerful library of materials for future analysis. Using historical data about dyes , sources around the Mediterranean area will be gathered. Finally, representative art objects of cultural heritage will be selected and subjected to dye analysis. The analysis will be performed using reference dyestuffs and corresponding (purchased or synthesized) standards.
